Where Eagles Soar

I have been gone for a while hunting big game.  This is the area where we were hunting.  It's near Eagle Colorado and it is truly magnificent country to explore.

Take Wing

Be it an idea, a child, or a bird...it is equally amazing to watch each spread their wings...and fly.

When Power meant Muscle

There was no power switch, no "on/off" button...just muscle power.  How things have changed.

Imagine Working This Hard

Mary and I took a hike through Red Rock Canyon Open Space, and I found myself wondering who the men were that worked in the sandstone quarry that is there.  It is amazing how hard they must have worked to cut the huge stone blocks in the 1800's without the aid of the modern tools and power equipment that we have today.  It’s a beautiful place for a hike.

History is Fascinating

I have dined at Thunder and Buttons on numerous occasions.  I love their Bison beacon burger by the way.  I guess I never reflected much on the name of the restaurant, but today I learned where the moniker originated.  In the late 1800's two local characters, Laura Belle (a popular lady of ill repute), and Prairie Dog O'Byrne (a local cowboy) used to blaze up and down Colorado Ave. in a wagon pulled buy two harnessed elk.  You guessed it...the names of the elk were "Thunder" and "Buttons".  Like Paul Harvey used to say..."and now you know the rest of the story".  I only wish I could have been there to see it.

Don't Let Anything Freeze

Winter's freezing temperatures are upon us, so make sure you are ready:
Disconnect outside garden hoses from the faucets
Winterize your RV, Trailer, or boat
Drain and winterize that swamp cooler, and your sprinkler system
Check the antifreeze in every car

Don't get caught with your pants down and let something freeze and crack.

Freedom Is Not Cheap

On this Veteran's Day every American should pay tribute to all the courageous men and women who have served in our military and who are currently serving today.  Their dedication to their country and our freedoms has kept America strong for hundreds of years.  We often take our rights for granted but without them, and the men and women who protect these rights our lives would certainly be different...and not in a good way.  God bless America and those who keep it strong.

This monument in Memorial Park stands as acknowledgment of all members of every branch of our military.  Stop by and offer the gratitude they so rightly deserve.  Better yet, next time you see someone in uniform, walk up to them and thank them for their service.

A Rare Show

Hanging in a dark corner, overlooked by most, it does not bloom very often, but when it does…it is magnificent.  The aroma is also very sweet.  It is analogous to some people I know.  They are normally very reserved, but when they step forward their greatness shines.

Don't Rush to Conclusions

We often run into people who just don't seem to fit in.  They seem strangely odd, or may have a completely different personality than we are accustomed to.  My advice is to slow down, don't rush to conclusions, take a little extra time to get to know them and find out what hidden talents they truly have.  You might be pleasantly surprised.  After all...we are all just a bunch of nuts in our own quirky way.

Health Food

Rabbit stew anyone?  It is very delicious, and actually better for you than chicken, lamb, or beef.

Daylight Savings Time

Do your part...save some daylight.
It’s not enough that we have to save Wall Street, all the bankrupt corporations, Greece, the Preble's Meadow Jumping Mouse, the Snail Darter, and all the convicted murders on death row, now we have to save daylight too?  When will it all stop?

Wine Doesn't Grow on Trees

We have all heard the saying that "money doesn't grow on trees", but have you ever heard the saying "wine doesn't grow on trees"?  Well…me neither.   But if you ever do, I found a tree that irrefutably contradicts that premise.

Last Leaf on the Tree

Nothing is more important than family and friends, surround yourself with both...don't be the last leaf on the tree.

The Horse in the Window

Every once in a while memories from your childhood sneak in and hang around for a while.  I can remember as a kid spending part of the afternoon sitting at the kitchen table doing my homework.  The window was open, the warm breeze blowing the curtains back and forth, and I could hear the other kids playing around the neighborhood.  I so wanted to go join the fun but I was trapped there…stuck inside…doing homework.  In later years I recall sitting in my office looking out at the mountains wishing I could go there but again...I was trapped…stuck inside…working.  When I noticed this horse in the shop window, and studied his face I could almost feel what he seems to be feeling. Good thing it is a carved horse and has no feelings...or does he?
